Adam Ytterberg

Biography

Adam Ytterberg's artistry captivates viewers with its rich narrative quality. Reminiscent of classic children's stories but tinged with a darker, satirical edge, Ytterberg’s work addresses contemporary themes such as identity, sexuality, and environmental degradation. His paintings serve as intricate visual sagas, each a fragment of a larger narrative that explores the complexities of human experience through the lens of whimsical, yet profound storytelling.

In his latest exhibition at CFHILL, Ytterberg continued his exploration of these themes with a new series of paintings that follow the adventures of recurring characters in fresh, uncharted realms. Drawing inspiration from physical locations that are in a state of transformation, his works foster a dialogue between characters and their environments, reflecting on the dynamic interplay between personal identity and universal concerns.

Ytterberg's technical prowess is evident in his meticulous process, which begins with writing a story or saga. He then sketches scenes and characters, transferring these visions onto canvas where they evolve through layers of rich, vibrant oil paint. This method allows for a depth and dynamism in his paintings, each becoming a self-contained world that invites viewers to delve into its many layers.

Influenced by artists like Otto Dix, Jenny Nyström, and Carl Barks, Ytterberg's work combines dystopian elements with a playful, almost cartoon-like aesthetic. His use of colour and form creates a sense of enchantment, drawing viewers into immersive worlds that blend reality with fantasy.

Ytterberg graduated from Konstfack in June 2023, yet despite his young age he has already manifested a growing prominence in the Swedish art scene for contemporary art. His ability to weave complex narratives through his art not only captivates but also challenges viewers to ponder deeper existential questions, making each piece an engaging experience.
