Adam Ytterberg Torun och farmor uppe vid Myhrbodarna

January 11 — February 9, 2024

About

Adam Ytterberg, painter, storyteller and master of his craft, emerges as a distinctive force in Sweden’s art scene. Recently graduated from Konstfack in June, Ytterberg weaves captivating tales reminiscent of classic children’s stories, imbued with a satirical edge and themes drawn from real-life concerns.

For his second solo exhibition, Adam Ytterberg introduces a new saga, a continuation of his storytelling prowess. Characters navigate unexplored realms in places that exist in the real world, addressing problems associated with identity and environmental degradation. Amidst parallel narratives, Ytterberg combines both personal experiences and universal themes, with a vision to make the vivid worlds in his mind accessible to viewers.

Influenced by luminaries like Otto Dix and Jenny Nyström, Ytterberg tells a story of specific events against a dark backdrop. Anthropomorphic creatures and fairytale-like landscapes, influenced by classical children’s stories, are painted in what could be seen as a cross between naturalism and the whimsicality of Donald Duck. His works navigate a dialogue between personal storytelling and universal human experiences, not unsimilar to Tove Jansson’s use of the Moomin world to deal with psychological effects. Ytterberg’s narratives delve into profound themes of identity, sexuality, and environmental concerns. Through tales of seeking belonging and exploring trauma, he integrates humor and eccentricity as coping mechanisms.

Beyond the canvas, Ytterberg’s maximalist works serve as a radical re-enchantment of the world, where we can reflect on our ourselves, and the pressing issues of our time. Torun och farmor uppe vid Myhrbodarna is not just an exhibition; it is an immersive scene that beckons you to explore, feel, and find hope in the complexities of life.
