About
CFHILL and Addis Fine Art are delighted to present From Modern to Contemporary: Artists from the Horn of Africa and Diaspora, Scandinavia’s first major survey exhibition of artists from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, and the region’s diaspora. The exhibition features nineteen artists who address a multitude of emotive, relevant, and timeless subject matters in their works, which combine here to reflect the many complexities of the human condition. It has been curated in close collaboration with Addis Fine Art, a pioneering gallery based in Addis Ababa and London. Founded in 2016 by Rakeb Sile and Mesai Haileleul, Addis Fine Art strives to promote artists from the Horn of Africa region and its diasporas by granting them both local and international exposure.
From Modern to Contemporary: Artists from the Horn of Africa and Diaspora is structured along thematic and chronological lines, and divided into four sections. First is The Modernists, those highly regarded Ethiopian artists who first emerged from the Alle School of Fine Arts—the oldest art school in East Africa—in the 1970s. The Contemporary, mid-career artists who were largely taught by the Modernists. The Diaspora includes artists who have roots in the Horn of Africa, but are now located all over the world. In the final category, The Emerging artists, we encounter the new vanguard of contemporary artists that is currently emerging from the continent and the diaspora.
