Mikael Jansson Iggy Pop

About

Mikael Jansson
Iggy Pop

Mikael Jansson’s images of Iggy Pop, shot in the manner of a classic fashion editorial, are nothing short of epic. The gritty punk rock attitude of one of the biggest stars of all time, paired with the sombre elegance of a perfectly lit studio shoot in black and white, makes this series one-of-a-kind. CFHILL is proud to present the exhibition Iggy Pop by Mikael Jansson, the photographer’s fourth with us.

The raw power of Iggy Pop’s characteristic body language permeates the exhibition space as it radiates from the large-scale silver gelatine prints. Even with flawless styling – the LBD, the Dior handbag, wind machine in the hair, an inkling of a smile and an icy, steady gaze – Pop embodies punk defiance like no one else. With the clothes draped as a second layer of skin on top of his chest he jumps around the studio – performing with the camera as his only audience. In the exhibition Iggy Pop at CFHILL, Mikael Jansson captures the intensely vibrant character of the cherished godfather of punk with love, dignity and respect, allowing the viewer to come closer than they could ever dream of.

Seeing these portraits, it comes as no surprise that Mikael Jansson started his career capturing the ecstatic vibe and magical moments of live concerts in the late 70s. Having learnt impeccable photographic craftsmanship from none other than the legendary Richard Avedon in New York, Jansson is one of the very few fashion photographers who, four decades later, is still never out of style. With an impressive client list including magazines like Vogue, Interview, and Harper’s Bazaar as well as luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Giorgio Armani, and Christian Dior, that is not likely to change anytime soon.

Mikael Jansson’s technical mastery and genuine passion for music, gives his images an intimate yet timeless quality that never ceases to amaze. With these fourteen iconic images of Iggy Pop, shot in Miami in 2010, Jansson clearly demonstrates why he is in a league of his own, and we are honoured by his continued trust in CFHILL, says Michael Elmenbeck, Head of Exhibitions, CFHILL.

Mikael Jansson’s previous exhibitions at CFHILL include; Speed of Life (2017) where he dives into the dynamic, high-octane world of Formula 1 racing; Daria, The Archipelago Series (2018) featuring iconic model Daria Werbowy; and WITNESSES (2018) an extensive portrait series of Holocaust survivors.
